Friday brought us the first day of the festival proper, and the day of the
festival launches. No we didn't go boating, but there were two
launches of the festival, one in Glenarm, the home of John Rea, and one in
Bushmills, the site of the festival. Glenarm is on the east coast of
Co. Antrim in the beautiful Glens of Antrim. Hector McDonnell, of
Glenarm Castle, was our Festival Patron, so we held a Festival Launch at
Glenarm Castle on Friday afternoon. We gathered at the Car Park in
Glenarm, and went together up to the Castle.

A bit of the Glen - Glenarm

And some of the dulcimers present were.......
I need to back up a bit, though. Before the visit to the castle, Nat took us up to John
Rea's house overlooking Glenarm and the Irish Sea, which is still owned by
family who were most gracious to allow us to tromp around on their lawn and
take pictures.
After we left the castle, we went to the Walled Garden on the Castle
Estate and ate lunch at the Tea Room there. As you can tell from the
pictures above, it was sunny and warm. I do believe I got a bit of sun
tan while there! And while we were at the Tea Room, Barry Carroll and his son,
Niall O Cearbhaill, arrived.
Upon leaving the Tea Room, Nat then took us to John Rea's grave located
in the cemetary near the estate. Here are some pictures of it.
After visiting the grave, we headed back to Bushmills to check into the
Education Centre.
On, to the Next Page!
