Monday was a day of rest, pretty much. Since we got to bed earlier than
usual the night before, we got up at 8AM, and went into Bushmills for breakfast at the New
Mill Pub & Restaurant. After breakfast we walked down to the local
used bookstore and bought some books. Coudn't come home with our
suitcases any lighter than when we went, could we?
When we got back to the Hostel, I tuned for the Folk Club, and we met a woman
named Michelle from Canada who was biking through part of Ireland. She
was interested in going to the Folk Club that night.
Some time in the afternoon, Lynda, the dance teacher from the Scottish Ceilidh
Dance called to ask Brandy if she would like to go to a dance
in Coleraine that night, and we made plans to get Brandy to her house at
7:30PM so she could ride with her. They would meet us at the Folk Club after
the dance. Then Dick called asking if we wanted to eat with him and
Sabine, Jenny & Tony, Dale, Lindsay and Julia & Fred. We said
sure, so we made plans for that, and for me to get back to pick up
Michelle after eating and dropping Brandy off at Lynda's. Did I say
it was a day of rest? I actually got all that eating, dropping off and picking up done in a timely
manner, and Michelle and I arrived in Ballymoney just as Dick and the rest
did.
The Black Nun Folk Club is located in the Tap Room at Kelly's Bar in
Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. Dick books someone in most every other Monday
night of the year. The way the Folk Club works is that the first half is
basically an open mic, so on this night, the line up, other than the featured
guests, Julia Lane & Fred Gosbee, included Scad the Beggars, Jenny
Coxon, Janetta Fairbairn, Dale Nupp, Lindsay Porteous, a 10 year old girl
named Ciabha on harp, and myself. We had some great music that
night, and ended it up with an ensemble of everyone who had
played and some that hadn't yet.
Sadly, no photos were taken of it, though I did video tape the whole evening, so again, if I
can get those 12-13 hours of video into my computer and find some good
frames, I will put them on here. (Don't hold your breath, though - it may
be awhile.)
Before leaving Ballymoney that night, I asked Dick if we'd see him again
before we left on Wednesday morning. He asked what we were doing on
Tuesday night. We had nothing planned. Tuesday was to be our
packing day to go home on Wednesday. He invited us to play with him
and Scad the Beggars at a birthday party in Ballintoy, just down from
the hostel where we were staying. So, we said yes, and planned to go.
