Cork Dulcimer Festival 2002 - July 26 Report and Pictures
|
I awoke at about 7AM on Friday morning! WOW! Seven hours's sleep
in a row! And I was feeling good! I got up, got ready, and went
out to a place called Waffles for breakfast. It was OK, but not as good as
Rearden's. At about 9:30AM, others started to get up and eat. We
hung around the aprtment until a little before noon, then walked down to the
Cork Vision Centre where Cindy, Emily, Jim and I were scheduled to play from
Noon until 2PM. It was times like this that I was most glad I had bought
a lighter dulcimer for this trip and ones like it.
We set up in the courtyard outside the Vision Centre, since the weather was again mild and sunny. We played until 2PM, then went to eat lunch at various places. Cindy had put her case out, and we made 7Euro busking there which was used to buy food for the apartment.

After lunch, Cindy, Emily, Jim, Brandy and I walked to the Living Tradition music store. Cindy was
looking for fiddle strings, and we wanted to see what they had. Interesting little store with lots of
ethnic music on CD and tape. We also went across the street to another music store that had more
instruments - drum sets, percussion, guitars, horns violins, etc. We walked back to the apartment and
got ready to go to the opening festivities at An Spailpin Fanac.
We got to the pub and set up in the upper section on the main floor - the festival participants were the session that night from about 7PM until 9PM.

At 9PM, we all adjourned to the upstairs of the pub where the round-robin "open mic sans mic",
the raffle, and the first official festival session would take place. Here are pictures of some of those
who played in the "open mic". Some poeple who played for the "open mic" were Adrian
Schofield, Jenny Coxon, Irene Stuart, Fred Woodley, Seamus Brady, Jack Bethel, Colin McAllister and Gaeroid O
Laoghaire, Cindy, Emily and I, and others. Even Christie was persuaded to play a tune.

|
When the "open mic" was over, a raffle was held. Brandy won a book of O'Carolan tunes
and stories. Then sessions followed, and visiting.
