Cork Dulcimer Festival 2002 - Pre-Festival Report and Pictures

Thursday came around and proved to be a very full day!  I got up around 6:30AM again, and had some coffee and fruit for breakfast that we had bought at Dunnes the day before.  Another beautiful day in Cork, it was!

After we both were up and had eaten, we went out to do some shopping, to get the tickets for the Saturday night concert at the Triskel Arts Centre, and to see St. Finn Barre's Cathedral, the Anglican/Episcopal Cathedral in Cork named for the patron saint of Cork, St. Finn Barre.

John Burns had asked us to meet Cindy, Jim and Emily at the bus station that afternoon, so we ate lunch, and headed over to the bus station, not far from the apartments.  While waiting there, Christie came up and said her Dad had the car, and she was going to play at the Cork Vision Centre to promote the festival.  She asked me if I wanted to play with her there, and I said yes, so off we went to do that while John waited for Cindy, Jim and Emily.

The weather was beautiful for playing outdoors, and Christie and I set up outside the front doors of the Vision Centre and played for a couple of hours.  The Cork Vision Centre is an old church building that has been re-done to provide a place for the City Government of Cork to show their vision for the city.  There is a model of the city and other exhibits inside.  Being an old church, there was a small courtyard with an iron fence at the street, and this is where we were playing.  There were chairs provided by the Centre set up on the other side of the courtyard for people to sit and listen if they wished, and groups would come and listen, then leave to be replaced by another group.  Some took flyers for the festival, and asked questions about what the instrument was.  A few I saw there actually showed up at open festival events!

I was really bushed after playing for a couple of hours and not having had enough sleep the night before, so I went back to the apartment to take a nap while Brandy and Christie went off to play and do things.  When I got there, I found Jim awake, but Cindy and Emily had crashed after their trip, and Jim was ready to. He told me the trip story, then we both took naps.

I woke up finally, and others had already gotten up.  There was a note to meet everyone downstairs in the Burns's apartment, so I got ready and went down. It was about 7PM.  We visited, heard Irene Stuart play her Hurdy-Gurdy, met Nat Magee from Co. Antrim, one of the featured dulcimer players at the festival, and Adrian Schofield a person of self-described "somewhat unique appearance" and an excellent Northumberland Smallpipe player who came to play pipes and to learn dulcimer.

We had a reservation, I think, for 9PM at Leonardo's Bistro, so we ate there and came back for a mighty session in our apartment - Jim, Emily, Cindy, Christie and myself.  As you can see, everyone was tired, but the session was really good anyway!  Stopped about midnight.
